When Cara Santa Maria was a child, she dug up her backyard hoping to find the next great dinosaur discovery. She hasn’t managed to outgrow her love of the prehistoric, as shown by a tattoo of Archaeopteryx lithographica she proudly bears on her forearm.
From 2004 until 2009, Cara taught biology and psychology courses to high school students and college undergraduates in Texas and New York. She has a passion for science education. It is her mission to make the fascination she feels for the natural world accessible to as many people as possible. She has also performed clinical and laboratory research on various topics, ranging from the neuropsychology of blindness to computational neurophysiology to adult neurogenesis in songbirds.
When she was twenty years old, Cara graduated with honors from the University of North Texas, where she studied psychology and philosophy. She went on to earn her M.S. in neurobiology in 2007.
Cara has appeared on Larry King Live (CNN), Parker/Spitzer (CNN), Geraldo at Large (Fox News), I Kid (TLC), The War Room (Current TV), The Nerdist (BBC America), The Young Turks (Current TV), and Attack of the Show (G4). She co-produced/hosted a pilot for HBO, and she has been a guest on multiple episodes of StarTalk Radio with Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson, The Joe Rogan Experience, and The Nerdist podcasts.
Until April 2013, Cara worked as the Senior Science Correspondent for The Huffington Post, where she produced and hosted a science web series called "Talk Nerdy To Me." She also co-hosts the Weather Channel original series/specials "Hacking The Planet" and "The Truth About Twisters." She works closely with The Young Turks Networks, and she is a contributor on the new Al Jazeera America show "TechKNOW."
Cara currently co-hosts and produces "TakePart Live," a nightly news and talk show on Pivot TV.
